Gymnastics bench converted to a knife bar

Finding a gymnastics bench in the kitchen is rather unusual, but not impossible - Gymnastics bench converted into a knife rack.

Most people are probably familiar with a gymnastics bench from their school days. Whether as a seat in gym class or as an actual piece of gymnastics equipment.

Gymnastics bench converted into a knife rack.

One of our customers converted such a bench into a magnetic knife rack. This required a few steps, which we'd be happy to show you.

Years ago, when I had the opportunity to get an old gymnastics bench from a school, I jumped at the chance. My first idea was to cut up the top board to make a new tabletop. After doing this, the writing on the lower beam of the bench caught my eye: It read "gymnastics equipment."

I had seen the idea for a knife rack in a magazine some time ago and was now certain I could make it happen with the beam in question. To do this, it first had to be split to achieve a thickness of 4 cm. The total dimensions of the knife rack are 40 x 8 x 4 cm.

The gymnastics bench is turned into a knife rack using a saw and drill.

After sawing, the holes for the disc magnets were drilled 2.5 cm apart using a Forstner bit and a pillar drill to a diameter of 3 mm. The same applies to the recesses for the neodymium flat magnets.

Then, the disc magnet Ø 15.0 x 8.0 mm N42 nickel - holds 7.2 kg was fixed with hot glue and neodymium pot magnet Ø 42.0 x 9.0 mm with counterbore holds 55 kg was screwed in place. Finally, the edges were lightly sanded and the wood was oiled.

For wall mounting, I also opted for the magical power of magnets. A perforated plate (38 cm x 8 cm) was cut with a metal saw and anchored to the wall. This allows the entire knife rack to be easily clicked onto the wall.

Thanks to the three disc magnets, even large knives are held easily, and the knife rack thus offers space for five cutting utensils.
