Magnetic knife block
Magnetic knife blocks are becoming more popular every day; everyone wants one, so our customer built his own magnetic knife block.
Magnetic knife block
This unique piece was created from an old barn roof beam and the following materials:
- Scale steel plate 150 x 150 x 15mm
- Scale round steel, 17 mm diameter, approx. 140 mm long
- Beam 130 x 130 x 300 mm
- M10 threaded rod
- Clear varnish
- Hardwood oil (suitable for children's toys)
- 32 x Rod magnet Ø 10.0 x 50.0 mm N52 nickel - diametrical
Manufacturing the base plate for the magnetic knife block:
- Drill an 8.5 mm through hole
- Cut an M10 thread
- Adjust the edges
- Optionally, paint with clear varnish (Tip: Use the underside as a support and paint it separately after it has dried)
Magnetic knife block - manufacturing the Round bar:
- Drill an 8.5mm hole (approx. 30mm deep) on the top of the rod
- Cut an M10 thread
- Optionally, paint with clear varnish (place on the side that will later disappear into the wood)
Mounting the stand on the magnetic knife block:
- Screw approx. 25 mm long threaded rods into the round bar.
- Screw these onto the base plate.
Magnetic knife block - Making the wooden block:
- Brush the old wooden beam (a round steel brush in a cordless screwdriver works perfectly for this).
- On each side of the block, drill two holes with a diameter of 10 mm, approximately 270 mm deep into the beam from the bottom.
- The edge distance should not be greater than 5 mm, otherwise the force of the magnets will be too weak.
It is important to use a pillar drill here, as otherwise a straight hole will not be created over this length and you will quickly break through to the outside.
(See Foto 1: Here, the magnet is already in the outer hole. When the magnet was in the inner hole, the magnetic force was too (slightly.) - Drill an 18 mm hole in the center with a Forstner bit to a depth of approximately 110 mm.
- Then, insert 4 of the rod magnets shown above into each hole.
- Finally, close the remaining hole with a wooden dowel and sand the underside smooth.
- Now, coat the round bar with wood oil (2 coats are sufficient)
This is how the magnetic knife block is assembled:
- The finished round bar can now be placed on the stand through the 18 mm hole. This allows the knife block to be rotated, allowing the knives to be attached to the side.
