Train coupling improvement – toy

Train coupling improvement - for a toy; more pulling power thanks to a stronger magnet.

Train coupling improvement - toy

Hello dear Magnet Shop team,
my son and I have put together an application for magnets using the block magnet 10.0 x 4.0 x 2.0 mm N50 Gold - holds 1 kg.

This is an optimization of a Lego-compatible toy train from Playtive (Lidl).
The coupling of Lidl Playtive trains contains very weak magnets from the factory that rotate freely, thus enabling the connection between the wagons.
However, these weak magnets often cause the wagons to easily separate, especially on longer trains, in curves, or on inclines.
This can be frustrating during play, as the train constantly falls apart.
For a significantly more stable connection, the magnets can be replaced with powerful block magnets.
This guide shows step by step how to easily convert the coupling – for a more reliable and powerful connection.

Step by step guide: Housing

Housing

1. Removing the coupling
Carefully pull the coupling off the train and set it aside for further processing.

Remove the coupling

2. Clamp the housing
Clamp the clutch housing in the vise. Tighten only enough to secure the housing without damaging it.

Clamp the housing

3. Disassemble the housing
Using a utility knife, carefully cut the gap between the glued housing parts and slightly enlarge it all around.
Work step by step to avoid breakage.

Cut the housing open

4. Open the housing
Carefully separate the housing parts using pliers until the interior is accessible.

Open the housing

5. Remove the old magnet
Remove the old, weak magnet from the housing.

Clean

6. Clean the housing
Thoroughly remove any adhesive residue with thinner or alcohol and a cotton swab. This will ensure reliable adhesion later.

Replacing the magnet

Replace the magnet

7. Insert the new magnet
Insert the new block magnet (10.0 × 4.0 × 2.0 mm N50) into the housing.

New magnet in the housing

Note: The new magnet is slightly wider and significantly stronger. Its size allows it to rotate within the housing, ensuring correct polarity at all times.

Glue the housing

Glue the housing

8. Glue the housing
Reassemble the housing parts and secure them with glue. Let them dry.

Install the coupling

9. Install the coupling
Reattach the completed coupling to the train.

Test and complete function

10. Test and final function

Once assembled, the new, stronger magnet provides significantly greater pulling power. The coupling now securely holds the wagons together, even on longer trains, curves, or inclines. This keeps the train firmly connected and makes playing more fun—without constantly falling apart.

With the help of our products, the pulling power of the toy has been increased without it becoming a danger to the child!
