How do you apply blackboard varnish or blackboard paint to a wall?

Applying blackboard paint or blackboard varnish is straightforward and can be done in just a few steps. However, to ensure the result is perfect and lasts a long time, some important preparations and techniques should be observed.

Prepare the surface

Before you start painting, it is important to thoroughly prepare the surface to be painted:

• Cleaning and drying: remove all dust, dirt and grease stains and ensure that the surface is dry. The paint can only adhere optimally to a clean and dry surface .
• Cover and Protection: cover adjacent surfaces, floors and furniture well to avoid paint splatters. Painter's tape helps create clean edges and protects adjacent areas.
• Priming and pretreatment: a primer is particularly recommended for highly absorbent surfaces such as untreated wood or plaster to improve the adhesion of the chalkboard paint and to balance the absorbency.

For rough surfaces, such as plaster or woodchip wallpaper, it is advisable to sand or smooth the surface beforehand. Alternatively, the wall can be covered with chipboard or plasterboard. If a surface is particularly absorbent, it may also be advisable to apply a deep primer beforehand.

How long does magnetic blackboard paint and blackboard varnish need to dry ?

Since varnish and blackboard paint are generally weatherproof and water-insoluble, you should always wear protective clothing before applying them. This will prevent unsightly paint splashes on your clothing, which are very difficult to remove later.
As a rule, it is sufficient to paint a surface once with magnetic blackboard paint.
In this case, half a liter of paint is enough for an area of approximately 5 m². After the paint has dried for 48 hours, you can get started and inaugurate your new blackboard with paint as you please!
