Why do you have to magnetize or demagnetize tools at all?

Tools such as screwdrivers or tweezers are not naturally charged magnetically. But when it comes to working in hard-to-reach places or overhead with just those work tools, a magnetizer or demagnetizer can be the savior in distress: the smaller the screw, the harder it is to place it properly. However, if the screwdriver is magnetized, the screw simply sticks to the tip.

However, the whole thing works the other way around too: For example, when working on a clockwork or other precision mechanical devices, it is problematic when tools are magnetically charged. Adhesive forces can easily lead to disruptions of the mechanism. Here the demagnetizer helps. This allows all residual magnetism to be removed in a few seconds.

The demagnetizer uses the magnetic force

The magnetizing and demagnetizing device makes use of the rules of physics. More specifically the properties of magnets. The demagnetization purely physically describes the loss of magnetic polarization of permanent magnets or ferromagnetic materials. Magnetization is then charging with magnetic force of substances.

A demagnetizer uses two permanent magnets and their magnetic fields. These are arranged so that the respective same poles lie directly above each other. This creates a repulsive magnetic force. The field strength varies alternately. Now, when a ferromagnetic object is introduced into this arrangement, the elementary magnets are arranged therein to be demagnetized or magnetized.

How does the demagnetization of tools work?

 Magnetize: Slowly guide the item through the + opening of the device. If necessary, repeat up to three times.
 Demagnetize: Guide the tool through the - opening just as slowly.

Depending on the nature of the screwdriver or tweezers, you must use the different steps. This can best be found out by trying out.

Important: Before you pass a tool through the demagnetizer, you must charge it magnetically. Otherwise, the process will only work conditionally.

 Passing speed: This can be decisive, especially for large and heavy objects. Often several runs are needed.
 Shielding: Especially in industry, products are often stored in transport baskets. However, these impede the demagnetizer because they can shield the magnetic fields of the objects.
